1955 Topps Roberto Clemente Rookie Card Sells for Over $1 Million

A Record-Breaking Sale for an Iconic Rookie Card

On February 23rd, Heritage Auctions saw a 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente PSA 9 sell for over $1 million. The card, featuring a horizontal layout, includes both a portrait and an action shot of Clemente, along with his facsimile signature and the Pittsburgh Pirates logo.

This incredibly rare piece is one of only 11 copies graded PSA 9, according to PSA’s population report. Even more exclusive, there is just one known PSA 10 Clemente rookie card in existence, making this one of the most coveted vintage baseball cards in the hobby.


Roberto Clemente’s Unmatched Legacy

Clemente wasn’t just an all-time great—he was a transformational figure in baseball. Over his 18-year career, he achieved:

  • 15 All-Star selections
  • 12 Gold Gloves
  • 1966 NL MVP honors
  • Four batting titles
  • Exactly 3,000 career hits
Beyond his accomplishments on the field, Clemente was a humanitarian icon. Tragically, in 1972, he died in a plane crash while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua, cementing his legacy as one of baseball’s most respected figures.
