The Scooby-Doo Commander Deck That Solves Its Own Mystery

Every Magic player has a spark of inspiration that comes from nowhere. Mine started when I found a deck box on Etsy shaped like the Mystery Machine from Scooby-Doo. It had the teal paint, the flowers, the vibe. I didn’t even need it, but once I saw it, I knew I had to build a deck that belonged inside it.

Where the Idea Started

The challenge was figuring out how to make a Magic: The Gathering deck that actually feels like a mystery. What mechanic could represent the gang’s constant search for clues? The answer was Investigate.

Investigate creates Clue tokens that you can sacrifice for two mana to draw a card. It’s the perfect gameplay version of solving a case. You take an action, earn a clue, and use that information to move closer to the truth. Every time you draw, it feels like uncovering the next piece of evidence.

The Right Commander for the Job

The face of the deck needed to be someone who lived for uncovering secrets. That role went to Morska, Undersea Sleuth from Murders at Karlov Manor.

Morska fits the theme perfectly. She removes your maximum hand size, creates a free Clue token every turn, and grows stronger whenever you draw your second card each turn. Her color identity in green, white, and blue gives access to ramp, removal, and card draw, which helps the deck run like a well-oiled mystery machine.

  • Green handles the setup and mana ramp
  • Blue handles the clues and investigation
  • White keeps things in order with strong removal and protection

Building the Team

The deck plays like an episode of Scooby-Doo. Every card has a job to do.

  • Tireless Tracker provides a steady stream of clues for playing lands
  • Thorough Investigation rewards you for attacking, adding more clues
  • Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse turns all that card draw into creature tokens
By the midgame, you’ll have a board full of artifacts. That naturally builds into an artifacts strategy, giving you another way to win if your main plan gets interrupted.

How the Deck Plays

The early turns are all about setup. Cards like Cultivate and Farseek help you build the mana base so you can cast Morska and start investigating.

Once Morska is out, the deck becomes a machine. You generate clues, hold up mana, and crack clues at the right time to draw cards. Since Morska’s ability works on any turn, you can wait until an opponent’s end step to grow her and still keep mana ready for a counterspell or instant-speed trick.

The gameplay rhythm feels like the Scooby Gang sneaking through a haunted house, uncovering secrets piece by piece.

Ways to Win

The deck can win in more than one way.

  • Morska can grow big enough to win through Commander damage
  • The token strategy can overrun opponents with creatures
  • The artifact theme can turn your clues into an unstoppable advantage
No matter which route you take, each victory feels like solving a mystery from start to finish.

The Spirit of the Deck

This deck sits comfortably in the mid to high casual range. It’s consistent, resilient, and always doing something interesting. Morska’s free Clue token each turn guarantees that you’re never stuck with nothing to do.

What makes it special is how true it feels to the source material. You investigate, you gather evidence, and eventually, you reveal the truth. It’s not just a deck that wins games. It’s a story that plays out every time you shuffle up the Mystery Machine and hit the table.
