Few products in the basketball card world manage to balance tradition with modern style the way Donruss Optic does. The 2024-25 release keeps that reputation alive, giving collectors a chromium version of the long-running Donruss brand while loading it with parallels, autographs, and inserts that bring plenty of excitement to every box.

At its core, Donruss Optic is about giving collectors a familiar design but with the added shine and finish of chrome stock. The base set itself stretches across 300 cards, divided into 225 veterans, 25 legends, and 50 Rated Rookies. If you liked the look of Donruss Basketball earlier in the year, this is the same template upgraded with a glossy finish that collectors have come to expect from Optic.

The rainbow of parallels

Optic is well known for its deep checklist of parallels, and this year continues that tradition. Hobby boxes include a wide range of colors and rarities, from Aqua numbered to 225 and Orange to 175, all the way down to Gold out of 10, Green out of 5, and one-of-one Gold Vinyl. Along the way are favorites like Red out of 99, Blue out of 49, Pink Velocity out of 79, Black Velocity out of 39, and short prints like Photon, Jazz, and Black Pandora.

Fast Break boxes bring their own twist, offering exclusive parallels that can only be found there. Versions include Purple out of 99, Red out of 75, Blue out of 49, Pink out of 25, Gold out of 10, Neon Green out of 5, and one-of-one Black.

Choice boxes lean heavily on exclusivity as well, with the trademark “Choice” design featuring circular patterns in the background. Collectors will find Dragon Choice, Red out of 88, White out of 48, Blue out of 24, Black Gold out of 8, and the rarest Nebula one-of-ones.

Autographs in Optic

When it comes to autographs, Rated Rookies Signatures take the spotlight. These are the main rookie autographs in the product, styled after the base Rated Rookies cards but carrying signatures. They come in multiple parallel versions, with certain variations tied specifically to hobby, Fast Break, or Choice boxes.

Additional signed content includes Opti-Graphs and Rookie Dual Signatures, giving collectors more ways to chase both rising stars and established names.

Inserts that pop

Donruss products have always leaned into flashy insert designs, and Optic is no different. This year’s lineup features Elite Dominators, Lights Out, Net Marvels, Rising Suns, Red Hot Rookies, and The Rookies. Each of these comes with its own set of parallels, meaning there’s plenty of variety to chase.

Case hits continue to fuel the buzz, with sets like Slammy and Alter Ego offering creative approaches. Alter Ego cards focus on nicknames and alternate personas, while Slammy delivers bold designs. Hobby-exclusive Downtown cards return as well, remaining one of the most sought-after inserts Panini produces.

Box breakdowns

For collectors wondering what they’ll get in each type of box, here’s the rundown:

  • Hobby: 20 packs of 4 cards each, with 1 autograph, 9 inserts, and 11 parallels
  • First Off The Line: same as hobby, plus 1 exclusive autograph or parallel
  • Fast Break: 10 packs of 9 cards each, with 1 autograph, 6 inserts, and 12 parallels
  • Choice: 1 pack of 8 cards, with 1 autograph and 7 exclusive Choice parallels

Release date and format

The official release date is set for August 20, 2025. Cases vary depending on the format, with 12 boxes per hobby case, 20 boxes per Choice case, and 20 per Fast Break case.

Checklist highlights

The 300-card base checklist features today’s stars, legends, and rookies. Veterans like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Anthony Edwards, and Jayson Tatum headline the main group. The legends section tips its cap to names such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Allen Iverson, Dirk Nowitzki, and Tim Duncan.

On the rookie side, collectors will find a strong class with Bronny James Jr., Dalton Knecht, Reed Sheppard, Stephon Castle, Zaccharie Risacher, Alexandre Sarr, Rob Dillingham, and many others. With Rated Rookies Signatures extending the checklist to 350 cards, the chase for autographed rookie content is as deep as ever.

Why collectors are excited

Donruss Optic sits in a unique spot in the basketball hobby. It is more affordable than ultra-premium products like National Treasures but still offers plenty of big-hits potential. The rainbow of parallels gives player collectors endless options to chase, while Rated Rookies Signatures provide the rookie autographs that many view as the most accessible cornerstone rookie cards of the year.

Throw in Downtown case hits, flashy inserts, and the allure of exclusives in Choice and Fast Break formats, and you have a product that offers both variety and prestige. Whether you’re a set builder, a rookie hunter, or someone chasing rare parallels, 2024-25 Donruss Optic Basketball is shaping up to be one of the most entertaining releases of the season.
