On the evening of July 17, 2024, a new chapter was written in the history of North American sports as 14-year-old Cavan Sullivan took to the field for the Philadelphia Union, making him the youngest player ever to debut in a major league team sport in North America. At just 14 years and 293 days old, Sullivan’s debut has shattered the previous record held by Freddy Adu, who debuted at 14 years and 306 days old for D.C. United back in 2004.

Sullivan’s entrance into the game came in the 85th minute, during the Union’s commanding 5-1 victory over the New England Revolution. This match not only marked a historic moment for Cavan but also featured a goal by his older brother, Quinn Sullivan, adding a familial highlight to an already momentous occasion.

Cavan Sullivan’s debut has now set the benchmark across all major North American professional sports leagues, including MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, NWSL, and WNBA. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the youngest debutants in each league are:

  • MLS (per Elias Sports Bureau): Cavan Sullivan (14 years, 293 days)
  • NWSL: Melanie Barcenas (15 years and 181 days)
  • NBA (since 1970, per Elias Sports Bureau): Andrew Bynum (18 years, 6 days)
  • NHL (since 1970, per Elias Sports Bureau): Patrick Marleau (18 years, 16 days)
  • MLB (since 1970, per Elias Sports Bureau): David Clyde (18 years, 66 days)
  • WNBA (per Elias Sports Bureau): Maria Stepanova (19 years, 108 days)
  • NFL (since 1970, per Elias Sports Bureau): Amobi Okoye (20 years, 91 days)
Cavan’s debut highlights a trend in Major League Soccer where younger players are increasingly making their mark. Since the beginning of the 2023 season, five of the ten youngest players in MLS history have made their debuts, emphasizing the league’s commitment to developing young talent.

The top ten youngest debutants in MLS history are:

The young phenom’s debut has also been captured and celebrated in the world of sports memorabilia. Topps, a renowned name in sports collectibles, has commemorated Cavan Sullivan’s historic moment with a Topps Now base card and game-used ball relics, giving fans a tangible piece of this unprecedented event.

Cavan Sullivan’s rise to this historic debut is a testament to his skill and dedication. Hailing from Philadelphia, he has been a standout in the Union’s academy system, showcasing his talents from a young age. His debut is a significant milestone not just for him personally, but also for the Philadelphia Union and Major League Soccer’s Homegrown Player model, which aims to develop local talents through club academies.

The support of his family has been instrumental in Cavan’s journey. His older brother, Quinn Sullivan, has been a guiding force, both on and off the field. The Sullivan brothers' connection was evident during the game, with Quinn scoring a goal in the same match that marked Cavan’s historic debut, underscoring the special bond they share.

As Cavan Sullivan continues to progress in his professional soccer career, his record-breaking debut serves as an inspiration to young athletes everywhere. It proves that with hard work and dedication, age is no barrier to achieving great things. The world will be keenly watching as this young talent continues to develop and make his mark in the sport.
