Heritage Auctions is currently hosting an intriguing Icons Photography Auction that features a series of autographed vintage photographs that will pique the interest of sports enthusiasts and collectors alike. A highlight of the auction is a rare 1948 photograph of basketball pioneer George Mikan, which is signed and expected to garner upwards of $20,000. This iconic image, captured in an 8x10 Type 1 photo, mirrors the one seen on his 1948 Bowman rookie card, adding a unique layer of sports history to the piece.

The auction also showcases a variety of other signed vintage photographs from notable athletes. Among them is a photo from the late 1940s of Cleveland Browns legend Otto Graham, signed by Graham himself and identical to the image on his 1950 Bowman Football rookie card. Another significant piece features Jackie Robinson in 1949 as he received his Silver Bat for securing the National League batting title, an award complemented by his MVP title that year. This Type I photo, personally inscribed to "Jeff," captures a seminal moment in Robinson’s illustrious career.

A poignant image of Jackie Robinson from 1957, depicting him emptying his locker at Ebbets Field after retiring, shows his Dodgers cap, jersey, fielder's glove, and other personal items. This photo is also signed and is anticipated to fetch over $10,000.

Collectors will also find a photo used for Willie Mays’ 1952 Topps card, featuring Mays' signature, believed to have been added in the 1990s. This piece bridges the gap between two collecting worlds: vintage sports cards and autographed memorabilia.

Over 150 vintage images are included in the auction catalog, covering a span of more than 100 years. Noteworthy among these is a photo from the controversial 1919 World Series, showing pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Dutch Reuther shaking hands before their game, priced to start at $8,000.

Additional highlights include rookie photos of Hank Aaron, Jack Nicklaus, and Pete Maravich, alongside images of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, providing a deep dive into the history and legacy of these sports legends.

The auction, which runs until June 13, offers an exceptional opportunity for collectors to acquire unique pieces of sports history, each enriched with the personal touch of the athletes’ autographs.
