This July, a unique piece of sports memorabilia will go under the hammer at Heritage Auctions—the only known Sandy Koufax "7 of Diamonds" card from the 1962 Pittsburgh Exhibits set. Graded VG 3 by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), this card is an extraordinary find in the world of baseball collectibles.

Sandy Koufax, known for his dominance on the pitcher's mound during his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, remains a towering figure in baseball history. His remarkable ability to strike out batters left many in awe, securing his place as a baseball legend. It's this reputation that continues to drive the desirability of his memorabilia among collectors.

The card itself originates from the 1962 Pittsburgh Exhibits, a set distinct for its playing card motif and initially distributed through penny arcade vending machines at Kennywood Amusement Park in Pennsylvania. The complete set comprises 82 postcard-sized cards featuring a blend of baseball stars and other celebrities from the early 1960s, making it a colorful glimpse into the era's cultural icons.

What sets this particular Sandy Koufax card apart is its rarity. Unlike the more common "7 of Hearts" Koufax cards from the same set, the "7 of Diamonds" is a one-of-a-kind item, adding a layer of intrigue and value. This anomaly, combined with Koufax's fame, makes the card particularly appealing to high-end collectors.

The card was part of a comprehensive Dodgers collection, which included a variety of memorabilia ranging from other cards to team paraphernalia. Jason Simonds, the Consignment Director at Heritage Auctions, emphasized the significance of this card, noting its potential to attract considerable interest and command a premium at auction.

As the auction date approaches, expectations are high that this card will not only draw the attention of Sandy Koufax fans but also serious collectors looking to own a unique piece of baseball history. The market for rare sports memorabilia has seen robust growth, and items like this Koufax card are often at the center of fierce bidding wars.
