One of hockey’s top young stars just became the newest face of Upper Deck.

Matthew Schaefer, a standout defenseman and widely considered a favorite to go first overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, has signed an exclusive multi-year deal with Upper Deck. The agreement gives Upper Deck sole rights to produce Schaefer’s trading cards, autographed memorabilia, and collectibles as he prepares for the NHL stage.

The 17-year-old OHL sensation called the partnership a personal milestone, describing it as a “full-circle moment” after years of collecting cards as a kid.

“I’m proud to begin this next chapter of my career with Upper Deck,” Schaefer said. “Being part of a lineup that includes so many hockey legends is something I’ll never take for granted.”

Upper Deck, which holds long-term licensing rights with the NHL and NHLPA, will add Schaefer to a lineup that includes names like Connor McDavid, Wayne Gretzky, and Cale Makar. His debut cards will arrive shortly after he hits NHL ice, including a highly anticipated Young Guns rookie card.

“Matthew is the kind of talent we love to showcase,” said Jason Masherah, President of Upper Deck. “His impact on the game is already being felt, and collectors are going to want to be part of that journey from the start.”

Schaefer made his mark with the Erie Otters in the OHL, racking up 22 points in just 17 games this past season, despite missing time due to injury. He was selected first overall in the 2023 OHL Draft and is already turning heads internationally after leading Team Canada to gold at both the 2023 U17 Challenge and the 2024 IIHF U18 World Championship.

Pre-orders for Schaefer’s signed memorabilia—including jerseys, prints, and pucks—will be available through Upper Deck’s online store by the end of the month. His first licensed trading cards are expected to follow after the draft.

The 2025 NHL Draft is scheduled for June 27–28 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where Schaefer’s name will likely be one of the first to be called.
