Major League Soccer has entered the Debut Patch card arena, mirroring the hype generated by Major League Baseball’s 2023 Topps Chrome Update. With the release of 2024 MLS Topps Chrome on December 4, collectors have a new set to chase, and one of its most prized cards—a redemption for Hugo Lloris’s Debut Patch Card—has already been pulled.

Hugo Lloris Redemption Pulled in Brooklyn

On December 7, Andy Wert at E and J Boutique in Brooklyn, NY, opened a hobby box of the new MLS product and struck gold: a redemption for Hugo Lloris’s Debut Patch Card. Lloris, one of the most accomplished goalkeepers in history, captained France to a 2018 World Cup victory and holds the record for the most caps in French national team history with 145 appearances. This year marked his MLS debut with Los Angeles FC, making the card an instant treasure for fans and collectors alike.

The hobby box, priced at just $120, contains two chrome autographs per box, but this redemption card takes the spotlight as one of the most sought-after pulls in the set.

A Breakthrough for MLS Trading Cards

The 2024 MLS Topps Chrome release marks the league’s first foray into Debut Patch Cards, showcasing authentic jersey patches from players’ first MLS appearances. The set includes 35 Debut Patch Cards, headlined by global stars such as:

  • Luis Suárez, the Uruguayan striker now playing for Inter Miami.
  • Emil Forsberg, Swedish international with the New York Red Bulls.
  • Federico Redondo, a rising Argentinian talent at Inter Miami.
Hugo Lloris’s Debut Patch stands out as one of the most coveted cards in the set, blending his storied international career with his transition to Major League Soccer.

Affordable Chase, Big Rewards

While MLB’s 2023 Topps Chrome Update hobby boxes have skyrocketed to $400 on the secondary market, the 2024 MLS Topps Chrome product remains a relative bargain at $120 per box. With several big-name Debut Patch Cards still in circulation, including those of Suárez and Forsberg, the chase is on for soccer fans looking to land their own piece of history.

MLS Expands Its Footprint in Collectibles

The introduction of Debut Patch Cards positions MLS trading cards as a rising force in the hobby. By spotlighting international stars and celebrating their MLS debuts, the league has tapped into a growing collector base hungry for unique memorabilia.

As collectors continue to open packs, the excitement surrounding 2024 MLS Topps Chrome shows no signs of slowing down. With Hugo Lloris’s pull making headlines, fans are eager to see which of the remaining iconic cards will surface next.
