Rookie Patch First: Brooks Barnhizer’s Unexpected Place in Hobby History

Brooks Barnhizer isn’t a household name, yet he just made a quiet bit of card history. On Tuesday, October 21, the 23 year old Oklahoma City Thunder guard stepped into the season opener against the Houston Rockets with 2:21 left in the first quarter and became the first NBA player to wear the Topps Rookie Debut Patch in a regular season game. His shift lasted 2 minutes and 15 seconds during OKC’s 125 to 124 double overtime win and he didn’t record a stat, but the patch debut is what collectors will remember.

He had company. Thunder rookie Chris Youngblood checked in with the debut patch on the final play of the first quarter. Later that night, Golden State’s Will Richard wore the patch against the Lakers. What would have been a routine first night of the season turned into a small landmark for the Topps program.

Barnhizer arrived as the 44th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft after four years at Northwestern. Thunder general manager Sam Presti has said he first noticed him while scouting another player, then kept watching the tough wing who kept doing the right things. That chance look turned into a draft day target.

His calling card is effort and defense with enough offense to keep defenses honest. He used Summer League to build a case, averaging 10.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. Sports Illustrated even tagged him a dark horse to crack the rotation. Preseason kept the arrow up with 9.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals across six games, which helped lock in a roster spot for the Thunder’s title defense.

Collectors will find plenty of Barnhizer this year. He is one of 45 rookies in the 2025 to 26 Topps Basketball checklist and appears in multiple autograph and relic inserts. He is also set for two relics in the 2025 to 26 Topps Holiday Basketball release, even if he did not land in that base set. Not bad for a player who started as a surprise name on a scouting trip and ended up wearing the first Rookie Debut Patch on the floor.
