Collectors and hobbyists across the Alamo City are preparing for sticker shock as Boomtown Sports Cards and Pokéshop prepares to adjust its prices. On Thursday, April 17, owner Vic Nava took to Facebook to explain why orders placed on or after Friday, April 18, will cost more for customers.

Nava opened his post by thanking the shop’s loyal community: “First and foremost, thank you all for being a part of the shop’s growth and success. We are still trucking along thanks to you.” He went on to express frustration that global trade policies had begun to spill over into local hobbies. “We choose to keep our heads in the hobby and keep the world’s problems away,” he wrote. “Sadly the real world and all its BS has begun to affect our hobby.”

The turning point came when two distributor emails landed in Nava’s inbox, warning of up to a 100% upcharge on essential plastic supplies. “Yeah…100%….we are pissed too,” he admitted. Faced with doubling costs, Nava explained that maintaining current prices would jeopardize the shop’s financial health. “I don’t agree with it and I don’t want to do it. If I keep prices the same, this could really hurt our business,” he said.

Customers responded with an outpouring of support. JD Nash commented, “Do what you gotta do, brotha. We’ll still support no matter what. Always a pleasure coming into the shop.” Another fan, Rey Jimenez, shared how Boomtown has inspired his children: “Because of you guys, my two little boys love collecting. Every time we go into San Antonio, that’s our first stop. Keep the hobby alive, brother!”

By sharing raw insights into the challenges of running a small business during shifting tariff landscapes, Boomtown Sports Cards and Pokéshop has underscored how international policy can impact local communities. As supplies become pricier, San Antonio collectors may soon see higher tags—but they’re rallying behind a store that’s been a steadfast part of their hobby for years.
