Shohei Ohtani's Historic 50-50 Club Home Run Creates Frenzy as Fan Walks Away with Priceless Memorabilia

Shohei Ohtani made baseball history in spectacular fashion, becoming the first player ever to join the exclusive 50-50 club—50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. The milestone moment unfolded in Miami’s Marlins Park early Thursday evening, when Ohtani crushed his second home run of the day, a shot that cleared the left-field fence and landed on a grassy strip, forever changing the trajectory of one lucky fan’s day.

As the ball flew into the stands, it became an instant piece of sports history—and a highly valuable collectible. The fan who claimed the ball secured a piece of memorabilia worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. But getting to it wasn’t easy.

Major League Baseball, anticipating Ohtani’s historic achievement, had already taken steps to mark each ball with a special ink for authentication purposes. And with good reason: baseballs tied to major milestones have fetched jaw-dropping sums at auction.

Interest in the ball is expected to be fierce, with American collectors vying for the chance to own a piece of Ohtani’s legacy. However, the demand from Japanese collectors may dwarf that of the U.S., as Ohtani is revered as a national hero in Japan. Auction houses agree that the ball’s value would be maximized if it’s sold soon, giving the fan a prime opportunity to capitalize on their newfound fortune.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, Ohtani’s current team, had hoped the ball would land in a secure area where it could be retrieved and returned to the star player. However, the fan opted to leave the ballpark with the historic baseball, deciding not to turn it over to the Dodgers.

While the home run came against the Miami Marlins, a team likely to finish the season with 100 losses, there’s little doubt Ohtani would have reached this milestone regardless of the opponent. His performance on that historic day was nothing short of extraordinary. In addition to hitting three home runs—including the 50th—Ohtani went 6-for-6, drove in 10 RBIs, and stole two bases, becoming the first player since 1901 to record at least five hits, multiple home runs, and multiple stolen bases in a single game, according to MLB researcher Sarah Langs.

It was a day for the record books, and Shohei Ohtani’s 50th home run ball now stands as one of the most coveted pieces of sports memorabilia in recent memory. Whether it ends up in the hands of a wealthy collector or a museum honoring Ohtani’s unprecedented career, one thing is certain—the fan who caught it walked away with more than just a souvenir.
