Spider-Punk and the Spider-Man MTG Set: What It Means for Commander

When Wizards revealed the Spider-Man Magic set without any preconstructed Commander decks, plenty of players were let down. But then came Spider-Punk, and suddenly the conversation shifted. Commander fans are now asking whether this unlikely hero might actually change the way the format is played.
Spider-Punk costs just two mana, and while his Riot ability gives him either haste or a +1/+1 counter, that’s not what has people talking. His real power comes from the rules he lays down for the entire table. Once he hits the battlefield, no spells or abilities can be countered, and damage can’t be prevented. That means the usual safety nets like Counterspell, Teferi’s Protection, or The One Ring don’t work anymore. For some players, that’s exactly the kind of red disruption they’ve been waiting for.
The split in the community comes from how double-edged his effect is. On your turn, Spider-Punk can clear the way for a win without fear of someone interfering. But the moment you pass the turn, your opponents get the same benefit. A rival with instant-speed threats suddenly has free rein, and Spider-Punk’s small body makes him easy to remove before you can capitalize.
Even with that risk, demand for the card is already high. Regular copies are preselling in the low twenties, foils are pushing sixty, and special borderless editions are landing between forty-eight and fifty-five dollars.
The set isn’t just about Spider-Punk. The Soul Stone is shaping up to be the top chase card, an indestructible mana rock that doubles as a reanimation engine. Doctor Octopus offers a possible Villain tribal commander with card draw attached, and Green Goblin introduces Mayhem, a discard-focused ability that turns thrown-away cards into playable threats.
