Vintage Card Records Tumble at REA's March Auction

Robert Edward Auctions’ March Encore sale saw unprecedented success, setting several records for pre-war and vintage cards. The auction was headlined by the sale of a 1933 V353 World Wide Gum Canadian Goudey Babe Ruth card, graded PSA EX-NM 6, which fetched $32,400.

Notably, two Ty Cobb cards broke records for their grades: a 1911 E94 George Close Candy Ty Cobb, graded SGC POOR 1, sold for $28,000, and a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Bat Off Shoulder with a Tolstoi Back, graded PSA EX 5, achieved $27,600.

The event showcased over 3,300 lots, attracting nearly 66,000 bids and generating sales surpassing $1.3 million. Among the top sales were:

  • A 1976 Topps #500 Reggie Jackson, graded PSA GEM MINT 10, for $30,000.
  • A 1980-1981 Topps Basketball Larry Bird/Magic Johnson Rookie, graded PSA MINT 9, for $25,200, nearly double its recent sales results and marking the highest price in two years.
  • A 1948-1949 Leaf #79 Jackie Robinson Rookie, graded PSA VG+ 3.5, for $23,400.
  • A 1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinet Honus Wagner, graded PSA GOOD 2 (MK), and a 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle Rookie, graded SGC GOOD+ 2.5, each sold for $14,400.
  • An Extremely Rare 1921 Schapira Bros. Candy Babe Ruth "Waiting For A High One" and Portrait Partial Box, graded SGC Authentic, for $10,800.
  • An 1888 N28 Allen & Ginter John Clarkson, graded PSA EX-MT 6, for $8,100, a new record for the grade.
  • A Billy Southworth Single-Signed Baseball for $8,100.
  • A 1909-1911 T206 White Border Cy Young Portrait, graded PSA POOR 1 (Brown Hindu Back), for $7,500, a new record for the grade.
  • A 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig, graded SGC GOOD+ 2.5, for $5,280, another new record for its grade.
Brian Dwyer, President of REA, commented on the auction's success, noting it as a testament to the strength of the vintage card market. He expressed excitement for the Spring Catalog Auction, promising the introduction of remarkable new-to-the-hobby cards and memorabilia items. The Spring Catalog Auction is scheduled to run from April 5 to April 21, offering several thousand lots.
