2023-24 Topps Cosmic Chrome Basketball takes things into outer space with lots of otherworldly designs and themes. It has some similar vibes as another over-the-top line from that rose to prominence in the late ’90s — Metal Universe. Only this time, like a lot of modern releases, it comes with a Chrome spin. Like its baseball counterpart, there are many levels to the checklist. While autographs can be found, they’re not a guaranteed box hit. The 200-card base set highlights active veterans, retired stars and some rookies (yes, that includes Victor Wembanyama). Like 2023-24 Topps Chrome Basketball, this isn’t an NBA-licensed set so there aren’t any team logos. Instead of focusing on typical action shots, the design uses lots of design elements. Shapes, neon colors, angles — they’re all in play. This carries over to the customary Chrome Refractors. Sure. there are colors, but many mix with different background patterns as well: Signatures come in three different styles: Cosmic Chrome Autographs, Milky Way Marks and Equinox Autographs. Each comes with long odds. Not only is there not an autograph in every box, but it’s possible you might not find one in a case. The trade off is the inclusion of signers who aren’t in Panini products at the moment like Wembanyama, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Brandon Miller. Inserts keep with the big designs and space themes.
