In a heartfelt tribute to one of baseball's most revered figures, MLB Auctions is launching a special auction featuring one-of-a-kind baseball cards to honor Lou Gehrig Day and support ALS research. The auction, set to begin on June 2, will include unique cards for each MLB team, each featuring a player chosen for their connection to Lou Gehrig’s legacy or their dedication to fighting ALS.
The initiative is part of an effort to keep Lou Gehrig’s memory alive more than 80 years after his death and to contribute to the fight against the disease that bears his name. Lou Gehrig Day serves as a platform to raise awareness and funds for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and atrophy.
Sarah Langs, an MLB writer and researcher who is battling ALS, selected the players featured on the cards. Langs will be honored by the Phillies on Lou Gehrig Day at Citizens Bank Park, highlighting her contributions to baseball and her courageous fight against ALS.
The auction offers a unique opportunity for fans to acquire memorabilia that not only celebrates their favorite players but also supports a noble cause. Among the items available are cards featuring stars such as Mike Trout of the Angels, Yordan Alvarez of the Astros, and Gerrit Cole of the Yankees, each representing their respective teams with pride.
In addition to the player cards, the auction will feature a "Priceless New York Yankees" experience, provided by Mastercard, adding an extra layer of excitement for Yankees fans and collectors.
ALS currently affects about 30,000 people in the U.S. and approximately 500,000 globally. It can strike anyone, at any age, and is uniformly fatal. There is no known cure, making research and support more critical than ever.
By participating in this auction, fans can help advance the search for better treatments and potentially a cure for ALS, while celebrating the enduring spirit of one of baseball’s greatest heroes. This event exemplifies the baseball community's commitment to supporting those affected by ALS and fostering hope through collective action and commemoration.
