Kicking off the new year, Robert Edward Auctions has unveiled its first sale of 2024, a grand Encore event encompassing a staggering collection of nearly 3,700 lots. This auction is a treasure trove for collectors, covering more than 180 years of rich sports history, with a particular emphasis on baseball memorabilia.

Among the standout items in this auction is an extraordinary piece of baseball history: a signed receipt from 1842 belonging to Alexander Cartwright, known as a foundational figure in the establishment of modern baseball. This rare artifact is a testament to the deep roots and enduring legacy of the sport.

The auction also highlights an extremely rare 1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco card featuring John Clarkson, a renowned Hall of Fame pitcher and outfielder. This card, graded EX 5 by PSA, is currently the only PSA-graded example of Clarkson, making it an exceptional find for serious collectors.

Another significant piece from the 19th century includes a personal scorecard from Harry Wright, who managed a game between Philadelphia and the Providence Grays on June 22, 1883. This unique program, scored in pencil and blue ink and adorned with Wright’s signature, has earned a high grade of 9 from PSA.

The auction's headlining item is an SGC 1.5 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, which is just one of the numerous Mantle items available. In addition, the auction features a collection of over 250 autographed items from some of baseball's most iconic figures.

REA President Brian Dwyer expressed excitement about the breadth and quality of the auction, stating that it's one of their strongest to date. He highlighted the exceptional range of signed items and iconic cards available, catering to a diverse spectrum of collectors.

The January Auction at REA is also set to showcase several other notable items. These include a 1914 E145 Cracker Jack #37 Grover Alexander card graded SGC VG 3, a 1986 Topps Football #374 Steve Young Rookie card with a rare SGC GEM MINT 10 grade, and an authentic Babe Ruth cut signature. Also featured are a signed 1938 Lou Gehrig postcard, a 1924 Walter Johnson signed album page, a 1939 Honus Wagner signed Baseball Centennial First-Day Cover, a trio of 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron rookie cards, and a 1957 Topps Football #138 Johnny Unitas Rookie card rated BVG NM-MT 8. Early Michael Jordan cards are also among the auction's highlights.

The signed checks section includes noteworthy pieces signed by Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, and Roberto Clemente. For T206 card collectors, the auction offers a broad selection of over 720 cards, including rare advertising backs and the highly sought-after Carolina Brights backs.

As is customary with REA's Encore Auctions, all items start with a bid of $10, making it an accessible opportunity for a wide range of collectors. This auction is now live on the REA website and will continue through January 21, providing a unique opportunity for collectors and sports history enthusiasts to acquire a piece of baseball's storied past and other rare memorabilia.
