The saga of a 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Hockey card case, which fetched $3.7 million at a Heritage Auctions event in February, continues as the buyer, Jack Arshawsky, a real estate agent from Vaughan, Ontario, has not yet taken possession. Having paid $3 million of the total price, Arshawsky has expressed a desire to find a new owner who harbors a deeper passion for the collectible. His decision came after learning about the disappointment of the auction's underbidder, sparking his quest to find a better-suited collector.
Despite efforts to sell the case to high-profile individuals including Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz, musician Drake, and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, Arshawsky has not yet succeeded. Heritage Auctions has noted that holding onto auction items for a while post-sale is not unusual due to payment arrangements, but they typically expect prompt full payment to facilitate payments to consignors.
The case, a collector's treasure, includes 16 boxes, each containing 48 packs, and is speculated to hold at least 25 Wayne Gretzky rookie cards. Its primary value lies in its pristine, unopened state, a rarity for items from that era. Before its auction, the case was authenticated by the Baseball Card Exchange and then resealed.
Arshawsky has enlisted the help of Hy Bergel, a lawyer based in Toronto, to assist in finding an appropriate buyer while the case remains secured in Heritage’s Texas vault. He has stated that his intent is not to profit from the resale but to ensure the collection finds a home with someone who truly values it. If a suitable buyer remains elusive, Arshawsky has considered an extraordinary gesture of gifting the case to a childhood friend, reflecting his wish for the cards to go to someone who will cherish them as much as they deserve.
